Who we are
betterrr is a small, independently-built application that helps you plan thoughtful gestures for your partner. It's available as a web app at betterrr.me, an iOS app, and an Android app. The same person who built it wrote this policy — there's no legal team here, just a commitment to not being shady.
This policy explains what data the app touches, how it touches it, and what you can do about it. If anything below sounds vague, write to us and we'll fix the wording.
What we actually collect
For the avoidance of doubt, this is the complete list of things the betterrr app or website ever receives, stores, or processes:
Stored on your device only
- Her name, the dates that matter to you (her birthday, your anniversary), her likes/dislikes/loves across food, activities, gifts and vibes, and her top love languages.
- The 4-week plan the app generates, including which suggestions you swapped or blacklisted.
- Your journal entries — including any photos or notes you attach.
- Your streak, points, level and earned badges.
- Your selected color theme and any custom ideas you've added.
None of this leaves your device. It is written to localStorage (web) or the equivalent secure local store on iOS / Android.
Sent to a server only when you ask
- AI-generated ideas: when you tap the wand button, the bio text and her profile (likes, love languages) are sent to an AI provider. See section 04.
Sent automatically
- Nothing. The site has no analytics, no telemetry, no pixels. The app has no analytics SDKs. We don't know how many users we have. We're choosing to not know.
How & where it's stored
Web (betterrr.me): data is written to your browser's localStorage under the origin https://betterrr.me. It is bound to that browser on that device. Clearing your browser's site data, switching browsers, or using a private/incognito window will mean you start fresh. There is no sync.
iOS & Android: data lives in the app's sandboxed local storage. It is included in encrypted device backups (iCloud / Google) only if you've enabled them yourself, and those backups are governed by Apple's and Google's policies — not ours.
We do not run any database with your data in it. We could not respond to a subpoena for your journal because we have nothing to give. That's by design, not by oversight.
The AI feature, specifically
betterrr has one feature that touches the network: the wand button labeled "Generate ideas from her bio." When you tap it:
- The freeform bio you typed about her and a compressed view of her preferences (likes, love languages, dislikes — first name only if you used it) are sent over HTTPS to a backend proxy at
statechannel.org/api. - That proxy forwards the request to either OpenAI or Anthropic, depending on configuration. The proxy injects an API key server-side so your device never holds a key.
- The model returns a list of date ideas. The proxy returns them to your device. The conversation is not logged on our side.
- OpenAI's and Anthropic's policies regarding API traffic apply to the in-flight content. As of this policy's effective date, neither provider trains on API content by default. We do not opt their training in.
You can use the entire app without ever tapping the wand button. The 4-week plan, ranked ideas, streaks, journal, special-event prep checklists, and everything else are computed locally on your device with no network calls.
Mobile apps
The iOS and Android apps are wrapped versions of the same web app and inherit the same data behavior. They request the following native capabilities only as needed:
- Local notifications — to remind you about upcoming dates and small gestures. Scheduled and stored locally; never sent through a push server.
- Photo library access — only if you choose to attach a photo to a journal entry. Photos remain inside the app sandbox.
The apps do not include third-party advertising SDKs, marketing SDKs, or analytics SDKs. There are no in-app purchases that share data with anyone.
Children
betterrr is intended for adults in adult relationships. It is not directed at children under 13 (or 16 in the EU/UK) and we don't knowingly process data about anyone in those age groups. If you believe a minor is using the app, write to us and we'll do whatever we can — though, as noted, we hold no account data to act on.
Your rights — and how to exercise them in one tap
If you're in the EU/UK (GDPR), California (CCPA/CPRA), or anywhere with similar law, you have rights to access, correct, delete and port your personal data. With betterrr these are unusually easy:
- Access: open the app — it's all there.
- Correct: open the relevant screen (Profile, Settings, Journal) and edit it.
- Delete:
Settings → Resetwipes everything. Uninstalling the app or clearing your browser's site data also wipes everything. There is no server-side copy to delete. - Port: the data is yours, on your device. You can export your
localStoragevia your browser's developer tools or via the in-app export action.
We don't sell personal data because we don't have personal data. There is nothing to opt out of.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change how data is handled — for example, if a future version introduces an optional sync feature — we'll update this page and bump the effective date at the top. Material changes will be flagged inside the app the next time you open it.
We will not retroactively change the data behavior for installs that pre-date the change. If you trusted version 24 to keep your data on-device, version 25 cannot reach back and take it.
